Silver Springs Senior Center director Rod Sanchez and Silver Stage Task Force were looking for ways to bring seniors and teens together when Sanchez attended a Task Force meeting last Fall.
Since then, the Senior Center and members of the Task Force have come up with several innovative projects that give local seniors and teens a chance to get to know one another better.
After several successful cooking classes by seniors for teens and 'tweens in Lyon Recreation programs, seniors and teens are teaming up again on Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. to offer hope on a subject that disproportionately affects both Nevada teens and Nevada senior citizens: suicide.
Nevada seniors over 60 have the highest suicide rate in the nation. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for our youths ages 10-24. Nevada has the second highest rate of suicide in the nation. But there are simple, easyÐto-learn, practical ways to change these sad facts.
The short, free class offered by trainer Deborah Aquino is open to anyone who would like to attend and will focus on the fact that anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. In just the way everyday people learn CPR, everyday people can learn three easy steps to question, persuade and refer acquaintances and loved ones and save lives.
Those who attend the training will leave knowing:
The common causes of suicidal behavior
The warning signs of suicide
How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
How to get help for someone in crisis
How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
Teens and Task Force members will host an ice cream bar at the training, in part to celebrate the Senior Center's new soft serve ice cream machine. There will also be a number of raffle prizes anyone who attends will have a chance to win.
This community service event is made possible by collaboration among Silver Springs Senior Center, Stand Tall and Silver Stage Task Force.
Call Cara Childs at 577-3880 or Quest Lakes at 287-7598 for more information. Silver Stage Task Force is funded by Healthy Communities Coalition.
