"Nobody knows the trouble I've seen ..." One can almost visualize our teflon governor Jim Gibbons-drink in one hand and the other above his brow - thinking the words that Stephen Foster gave us many, many years ago, as he sits on the front porch of his Reno home, contemplating.
His short-lived legacy (he will be a one-term governor, if he isn't recalled first) will be simply that he was the worst governor in the state's history, and bullied, cheated and lied his way into a job that he wasn't qualified for in the first place.
As our congressman in Washington D.C., he was a loyal little "Bushie-boy" and did nothing unless directed to by the White House. Somehow, he hoodwinked Nevada voters into thinking that this qualified him to be our governor.
The yellow flags should have gone up when the news first broke of the Sierra Nevada Corporation/ ETreppid scandal, in which Gibbons is and was, the central figure. Then came the suspicious firing of a U.S. Attorney in Reno, in which teflon Jim again played a role. Gibbons also was made aware of a sex-with-a -minor episode in Washington D.C., involving a friend and major contributor to the Bosh White House - and said and did nothing, as he was instructed to do by then Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. As our congressman, he received substantial cash gifts and a week-long cruise for he and his wife, courtesy of Sierra Nevada Corporation. Why? Was it his reward for steering several no-bid contracts worth millions to SNC.
Then during the closing weeks of his campaign for governor, there was the Christy Mazzeo occurrence. Gibbons and his campaign manager Sid Rogich were slugging the drinks down in a restaurant/ bar and sided up to Ms. Mazzeo and her friend. After more "slugging," Mazzeo got up to leave and "Gentleman Jim" offered to walk her to her car. Rogich appeared to be unaware of the goings on, or he surely wouldn't have allowed his candidate, the future governor, to do what he did.
A couple of days later when Mazzeo publicly accused Gibbons of sexually harassing and groping her, the Clark County Sheriff immediately came to his rescue. There were many security cameras in the parking garage where the incident supposedly happened, but isn't it just a coincidence that the only one that was turned off was the camera that would have shown Gibbons allegedly groping Ms. Mazzeo?
Gibbons' close friend and campaign contributor, the Clark County Sheriff, conveniently did not have enough evidence for the district attorney to follow through on.. The poor waitress never had a chance.
Gibbons has now shown us his inability to control the state's finances and has announced that in addition to the first "shortfall," there is a second shortfall that may require MORE cuts and even some taxes, God forbid! Strange, then, when Gov. Guinn left office, Nevada had a surplus, and he even gave some of that money back to its citizens.
Gibbons has only been in office a year and a half, so how could we be in so much trouble so quickly? I am beginning to understand why Kenny Guinn, a fellow Republican, refused to support Gibbons and even conducted a search for a candidate to run against him. He campaigned as our "Education Candidate," so where did he make his first budget cuts? Why, EDUCATION, of course! From elementary schools all the way to the University of Nevada.
Now, he apparently has no further use for his wife, Dawn. After she played the role of the perfect political wife, he is intending to make her the "bad guy" by filing for divorce and requesting that SHE pay all his attorney fees and court costs. Gibbons is a gutsy guy, right, especially when it comes to women? Jim Gibbons has no idea how to effectively govern a state, either.
