For the first time in four years, some Fallon Greenwave swimmers have qualified for the 4A State Swimming Championships.
The boys' 200-yard medley relay team of Alex Belbin, Trent Martin, Sean Sweeney and Marc Pereira qualified for this weekends state meet by finishing in third place at the Northern 4A Regionals on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center in Carson City. The team finished in a time of 1 minute, 50.39 seconds to take the third-place spot.
"To tell the truth, the boys actually came in fourth at first," coach Atsuko Perkins said. "But then Douglas got disqualified because of a false start, so we moved up to third and are going to the state meet."
Perkins said the team took seven seconds off its previous best time.
"It was a really good swim," Perkins said. "Everyone took time off of his part in the relay."
The NIAA Swimming and Diving championships will be held this Saturday in Las Vegas at UNLV. The Fallon team will face some tough competition there.
"It's going to be a tough one because those schools from down south always bring in good teams," Perkins said. "So it will be tough for us to get a top place."
The water in the Maine Street fountain will be dyed green on today at 3 p.m. in commemoration of the relay team making it to the state meet.
The Fallon boys' team finished sixth in the meet. Reno came in first, followed by Carson, Manogue, Spanish Springs and Douglas. Fallons other high finishers were Pereira, sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.63, Sweeney, eighth in the 100 butterfly at 1:02.54, and Chris Bloomfield, eighth in the 500 freestyle at 5:50.29.
The girls' team finished 17th out of 18 teams with nobody finishing among the top 10 in any event.
