Mary Jean Kelso • Fernley Today CJ Gueldner, market coordinator for the 2008 Fernley Farmers Market, displays an ear-of-corn costume to be used by a sign waver to entice customers into the venue.
Don't be surprised if you see a giant ear of corn shaking a sign at you from the corner of Main Street and Highway 95A at Fernley's only intersection with a traffic light.
It will be to get your attention for the Fernley Farmers Market. The market is due to open at In-Town Park Wednesday evenings from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., from June 4 to August 27.
Event organizer and market coordinator CJ Gueldner is working under the sponsorship of The Wadsworth/Fernley Lyons Club to bring the popular venue to fruition.
"We think the location will give a lot more visibility and have more foot traffic," said Gueldner.
Along with locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, there will be other vendors and nonprofit booths and entertainment for all ages.
On June 4, the market's opening-day ceremony will include Master Gardener Connie Lorraine demonstrating hydroponic gardening and the MDA Fundraiser & MILK event, under the direction of Robert Gleason. Representatives of the nonprofit Circles Community Initiative will talk to people.
For the Apple Everything Contest, people can enter their favorite apple recipe for a $10 fee, with the proceeds benefiting the Fernley/Wadsworth Lions Club and/or its youth group, the Leos Club.
Other events planned throughout the season are a fundraiser for Cathy Brindos, a Fernley woman awaiting a double-lung transplant; and a Bicycle Safety, Car Seat Safety and Child ID Day with a petting zoo hosted by a local 4-H group.
Performances by Kids Take the Stage are planned for June 25 and July 9. The Dark Moon Dance is scheduled for July 2. Other events planned are demonstrations by the Universal Tae Kwon-Do group, a Kite Day with a kite contest for best kite ($5 entry fee) and a Nifty Fifties Day.
"We're aiming for 20 to 30 vendors," Gueldner said.
Vendors can still reserve spaces by the day, week or month, with discounts available for multiple set-up reservations. Free booth space is available for nonprofits. Several new commercial vendors, as well as old standbys, will sell produce and products. Spaces can be reserved by calling (775)302-6260 or by e-mailing
