Past controversy surrounding School Board Trustee Dave Ash's former Web site has caught the attention of a public awareness group in the nation's capital.

Ash, who is attending an educational conference in Florida, was notified by ED in '08 Campaign, a nonpartisan public awareness and action campaign aimed at making education a priority in the 2008 presidential election, it wanted to talk with him about his former blog site. Ash shut down the Web site amid controversy from the Churchill County Education Association.

The controversy surrounded some anonymous blogs that criticized a few teachers that resulted in the Churchill County Education Association filing a grievance against the district.

At that time Ash closed his Web site, he said the money needed to defend him and the site should instead be spent on students.

The ED in '08 Campaign, funded by a substantial contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates and The Eli and Edythe Broad foundations, seeks to unite people with the crucial mission of improving public schools by ensuring the nation engage in a vigorous debate during the presidential election.

Ash accepted an invitation to visit Washington, D.C., May 14-15 to attend a bloggers' conference, entitled Blogging from the Trenches.

"Your first-hand experience with blogging as an educator will be essential to the dialogue of this forum. We hope you'll contribute your experiences on a number of topics, including the challenges you face, and the objectives you seek in filling the roles of both a blogger and an active figure in the education community," said Matthew Scheaff of Strong American Schools in an e-mail to Ash.

Ash never envisioned his former blog was garnering nationwide attention.

"I was totally surprised and amazed it had gone this major," he said, adding it is an opportunity and another way to deliver information to the entire public.

Craig Cobgan, a journalist and blogger, mentioned on his site the controversy that was occurring in Fallon.

"They asked me why I did the blogging and how it helped," Ash said, mentioning his blog was discussed at the conference in Florida.

Ash will be part of a three-member panel that will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of blogging.

Ash said the conference will also discuss the future of blogging and how to improve it in the future,

"It is an opportunity to promote education on the front burner," Ash said. "It is a great opportunity to do so."
