READER DISPUTES "RICH GUYS CHARITIES"

Dear Editor:

Regarding a recent article entitled "Pork projects escape cuts," the phrase "rich guys charities" was used. One of the organizations mentioned was the Nevada Cancer Institute which has an office in Fallon.

Your articles indicates this organization only helps rich people. This is furthest from the truth, and anybody who believes this is either misinformed or just a fool.

My wife was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, but like so many others in this country, we have no health insurance. We were faced with the fear of how my wife would receive care and treatment to save her life any how we would pay for this and everyday basic needs.

Twelve days before my wife became ill, I was forced to stop working due to my own health. In a matter of two week, we went from two incomes to none.

I asked the state of Nevada for help with medical assistance for my wife and was told were entitled to nothing unless we applied and were approved for Social Security disability or SSI. I did and we are still waiting.

Social Security will not make a decision until the state determines whether my wife is disabled or not. The state is dragging its feet waiting for my wife to die, and they will not help. In the meantime, I was told about the Nevada Cancer Institute.

I contacted the Fallon office and met Tina Kropel, who, in my book is an angel. She immediately went to work to help us with our basic needs and contacted other nonprofit agencies that could help.

If it were not for these so-called "rich guys charities" along with hospitals in Fallon, Hawthorne and Carson City and doctors Murray, Leaming and McDonald who care about people first and worry about money last, then my wife would not have any chance at all.

We are blessed to have such caring health facilities and doctors.

In closing I would like to say this to Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio and Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley: You need to look at all the good things that these so-called "rich guys charities" do to help people when the state and federal agencies drag their feet and don't care. Before you talk about cutting funding to these organizations, know without them many individuals and families in our state will suffer.

ALLEYS ARE IN TERRIBLE CONDITION

Dear Editor:

Our dirt inner-city alleys are in terrible condition. More like obstacle courses, specially after a rain.

In the past our alleys were periodically graded and covered by a clay gravel mix. However, it hasn't been done for a lot of years.

Come on, you city dwellers. Let's motivate those graders and loosen up with a few bucks and make our alleyways useable.

GOVERNOR IS MORE OF A BUFFOON NOW

Dear Editor:

Although we've had flashes of it since his swearing in, Gov. Jim Gibbons couldn't be more of a Political Buffoon now if he tried! When the Edoscopy Clinic scandal first broke, our fearless leader jumped into action and took it upon himself to deny everything for his friend, the Clinic Director, who, of course, was a major contributor to his campaign.

Teflon Jimbo even went so far as to deny that syringes had even been reused ... in spite of a staff member's admission that they had. Aren't we fortunate, though, that our Governor was on the scene to document all his denials?

I have an excellent suggestion for him now: He should round up the SIX victims who tested positive for Hepatitis C, plus any others who subsequently test positive, give them some military issue Birkenstok sandals and ship them off to Iraq. There, they could be the "human shields" he so vehemently crusaded for in his plagiarized speech at a recent Elko Republican Lincoln Day Dinner! What's next, Jimbo??
