The Ham Hocks have had a busy month.
We decided as a club to volunteer at the Fallon Daily Bread. My mom Sara, grandma Christine Camper and I came early to cook lasagna and set up the tables, chairs and silverware. Joe Jordan and Heather Sorenson helped a lot. The rest of the kids came later to serve food to the people. I think we all enjoyed it.
I took pictures which annoyed some of the girls like Ashley our leader.
On Saturday, March 15, Amanda Allegre set up a showmanship clinic for all the larger species of animals. I think there were kids from all the clubs.
The pig clubs are Ham Hocks, Swiners and the Wild Hogs. The beef clubs are Churchill County Beef Club and the Buckaroo Crew. The goat and sheep clubs are Goats-R-Us and the Churchill County 4H Sheep and Goat Club and the Laminators.
Miss Amanda invited Dr. Celina Johnson, a professor from Chico State University, to teach the kids how to show the different species of animals. She told us how to fit each animal, which in case you don't know what fitting is, it's the washing, shaving and grooming of an animal for the show.
This is done to make your animal look better for the judge and the buyers. Your also supposed to give your animal some space and not crowed them when you show them.
Dr. Johnson also told us how to set up your animal and to keep eye contact with the judge.
Warning ... no fake grins, you're supposed to look like you're having fun and like you're in total control no matter what.
Thanks Miss Amanda and Dr. Celina.
