When the pitching struggled, the Lady Wave softball team made up for it with timely hitting and discipline.
"That's the key. Some days the pitching, you know, is not 100 percent,"Fallon coach Phil Pinder said. "We had a real shaky (third)inning."
Fallon scored nine runs --five on walks and three on wild pitches - in the fifth inning and swept Galena, 17-7, Tuesday afternoon in its home opener at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex.
"That showed,"Pinder said of the walks. "We had discipline with the pitch selection. We didn't want to give up anything."
Fallon (5-1 High Desert League) swept a doubleheader last week at Galena and doesn't compete until next week's three-game series with the defending state champs, Spanish Springs.
"To sweep people is very tough as we found in Elko,"Pinder said of Fallon's two wins over the weekend. "Nothing is ever easy. Teams don't lie down. Give Galena credit."
Kate Pinder picked up the win despite allowing 12 hits in her shaky outing. Megan Finch took the loss.
Ahead 8-7 in the last inning, Fallon's discipline led to three runs scoring on walks. Kortney Smith, Casey Pomeroy and Sam Ward each singled a run with less than two outs. One run also scored on a wild pitch.
Alyssa Meihack's two-run single into center field ended the game on the mercy rule.
Fallon trailed only once, 3-1, in the third inning, as it scored seven runs in the bottom half.
