Fallon’s Deter Daum and Billy Sorensen were named honorable mention to this year’s All-Sierra Nevada Boys’ Basketball team.
Players were selected from the newspaper coverage areas of four Lake Tahoe newspapers, the Record-Courier, the Nevada Appeal and the Lahontan ValleyNews.
Daum, a junior, averaged 14.1 points per game and shot 34 3-pointers. Sorensen, a senior, had a 10-2 per game scoring average and knocked down 17 treys.
The first-team picks are as follows:
James McLaughlin, Douglas: McLaughlin is one of the funnest players to watch that’s come through Douglas in quite a while. He has a lightning-quick trigger from outside the arc, is lethal when he gets loose along the baseline and is one of the more acrobatic players in the north when it comes to breakaways. He averaged 10.7 points per game this year and hit 37 3-pointers.
Jeff Nady, Douglas: Nady came into the year with big shoes to fill, literally, after 6-10 Keith Olson spent the previous four years roaming the post for the Tigers. Nady didn’t disappoint. He averaged 17.4 points per game while the Douglas offense ran through him from the start of the season. He was also a surprisingly good outside shooter, hitting 23 3-pointers this season.
David Laird, Douglas: If Nady was the driving force of the Tigers offense, consider Laird the foundation of the Douglas defense. Aside from being one of the top interior defenders in the north, he gave opposing coaches headaches whenever he teamed up with Nady inside. Douglas was among the toughest teams in the region to score on inside the paint, thanks largely to Laird.
Luke Babbitt, Galena: The McDonald’s All-American finished as the state’s all-time leading scorer with 2,941 points in his career. Babbitt also led Galena to the NIAA 4A State Championship in 2007. This past season, Babbitt averaged 31 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.4 blocks a game. He will play at the University of Nevada next season.
Matt Rutledge, Carson: The Senators point guard averaged 10.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and one steal a game in making the all-Sierra League second team.
Vince Capellino, South Tahoe: The 6-foot-5 Capellino averaged 17.4 ppg and was an all-league second team choice.
Hans Meyer, Dayton: Dayton coach T.W. Cunningham said Meyer was the Northern 3A’s best defensive player, consistently holding the opponent’s top scorer to under double digits. Meyer was second-team all-Northern 3A and an 3A honorable mention all-state pick. He averaged eight points, seven rebounds and two steals per game. He is a 4.0 student.
Josh Dykstra, Incline: Dykstra averaged 17.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in being named to the all-Northern 3A and all-state first teams.
Pat Galvin, Truckee: Galvin, a senior, was Truckee’s most well-rounded player the past two seasons. A 6-foot-3 post player and guard, Galvin always hit the boards hard and played tough defense while also leading the Wolverines in 3-point shooting, making a total of 33 and connecting on 62 percent of his shots from behind the arc. Always calm and collected, Galvin led by example on the court with his unselfish and intelligent play. “He has a good attitude and is a great leader,” said Truckee coach Steve Ames.
Honorable mention: Rob Valerius, Carson; Micha Corniel, Incline; Scott Bristol, Galena; Dexter Daum, Fallon; Billy Sorensen, Fallon; Tony Stagnaro, South Tahoe.
