"Many Fernley residence lost or experienced extensive damage to their homes on Jan. 5 and are in need of community assistance,” said Wayne Capurro, president of RSAR. “Realtors understand how important and essential homes are to a family and the emotional tie these families have to their homes. Our organization wanted to do as much as we could to help these flood victims get their homes fixed and lives back on track.”
RSAR applied for $50,000 for the REALTORS® Relief Foundation and was granted the full amount. The Nevada Association of REALTORS® donated $20,000, RSAR donated $10,000, and the Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS® and the Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® each donated $5,000.

As well as the donation of relief funds, RSAR took immediate action following the canal breach contacting its members to create a list of available rental homes within a 60 mile radius of Fernley that could be used for temporary housing at a discounted or free rent for the flood victims. RSAR was able to generate a list of more than 70 homes that was shared with the Lyon County Human Services for them to use a resource to share with victims who were without a home.
“Immediately following these tragic events, we knew we had a very valuable resource that could benefit the people affected by this flood,” said Capurro. “Our members were more than willing to step up and share information about homes that could be used for displaced families in Fernley.”
This week, inspectors visited the 598 homes within the square mile of the city affected by the flood. Four homes were red-tagged for major structural damage and are unsafe for occupancy. An additional 122 houses had minor structural damage with significant safety hazards. The remaining 472 dwellings had no structural damage or safety hazards, but had ruined carpeting or wet walls.
