The presidential election may be about a year away, but both the Nevada Republican and Democratic presidential caucuses will be held in January, and voters need to keep a few upcoming dates in mind.
According to the Nevada Republican Party's Web site, voters must be registered as Republicans 30 days prior to the caucus held Jan. 19, 2008. The state Democrats' Web site states participants in the caucus must be Democrats registered to vote in the precinct, but voters will be able to register as a Democrat at the caucus.
The last day for voters to change their party affiliation by mail is Dec. 30, 2007, according to the secretary of state's election calendar.
Kelly Helton, Churchill County clerk/treasurer, said voter registration forms are available at the Churchill County Administration Building, senior center, library, Western Nevada College and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Voters will have another opportunity to register in person in mid July 2008.
Candidates may file their declaration of candidacy from May 5 to May 16, 2008, with the last day to withdraw a candidacy being May 28.
The 2008 primary election will be held Aug. 12, with early voting taking place July 26 through Aug. 8. The general election takes place Nov. 4, with early voting Oct. 18 through Oct. 31.
National and state offices that will be on the ballot include president, District 2 Congressional representative, Central Nevada state senator, State Assembly seats for districts 35, 36 and 38, and two Nevada Supreme Court justice seats.
On the local level, two county commission seats will be on the ballot, along with all three District Court judge positions. Voters will also elect one school board trustee and one Mosquito Abatement District seat.
Local political parties are gearing up for the upcoming caucuses in January. The Churchill County Democrats held their second mock caucus Saturday. Gaye Johnston, former secretary of the local political group, said the two mock caucuses brought out about 50 participants, but she's unsure of how many to expect for the real deal.
The local Democrats will hold their caucus at the multipurpose building at the fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 19.
On the Republican side, a location for the caucus has yet to be established, but the time will likely be 9 a.m. to noon, said Mark Feest, chairman of the Churchill County Republican Central Committee. He said all local caucuses agreed to hold their events at the same time, established by the state party. He said the party will ensure word gets out about the caucus location prior to the event.
Although Republicans need to be registered 30 days before the caucus to participate, young voters can take part if they can prove they will be 18 by the general election date.
Prior to the start of the Republican caucus, representatives for each presidential candidate will be given about two minutes to stump for their candidate. Feest said he's already getting calls from top candidates regarding Nevada's caucus.
Following the caucuses, each party will hold a county convention where delegates to the state convention will be elected. The Democratic county convention will be held Feb. 23, followed by the Nevada State Democratic Convention April 18-20.
The Republican county convention is scheduled for March 5, with the Nevada State Republic Convention held April 26.
