Jackpot roping and two days of rodeo action highlight the sixth annual Senior Pro Rodeo when it comes to the Churchill County Fairgrounds this weekend.

Ella Whitmer, president of the Fallon Senior Pro Rodeo committee, said her committee has been working for the past year to make this weekend a special one for the cowboys and cowgirls who need points going into the national finals, which begin in late October in Winnemucca.

"We expect many contestants for the last rodeo of the season," Whitmer said.

The Senior Pro Rodeo is for contestants ages 40 and older.

Whitmer said the committee added jackpot roping Friday night. Although the roping is not officially part of the rodeo events, Whitmer said it will involve more people from the community.

"It's open to everyone, not members," she said.

Whitmer said the collected fees for jackpot roping will be "put in a pot and divided." Signups will be at 6:30 p.m. with roping beginning at 7 p.m.

The two rodeo performances will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

For the first four years Fallon had the rodeo, the final rodeo of the year took place in California. Whitmer said several communities in that state have decided not to host rodeos because of the time involved.

In six years, the Fallon rodeo has become a major stop on the 35-city, 14-state senior circuit that begins in February.

Whitmer said upward to 200 contestants will show their skills in Fallon. Many cowboys and cowgirls competed in Fernley last weekend and have remained in the area.

"They're not all staying at the fairgrounds," Whitmer said. "Some are staying in our area's motels and eating in the restaurants."

She said the Senior Pro Rodeo is good for Fallon's tourism. Whitmer said contestants pump thousands of dollars into the local economy.

Not only will the Fallon rodeo have events for older contestants, but it will also have stick barrel racing for children ages 2 to 6. Whitmer said contestants should bring their own sticks horses, but she has some stick horses to loan.
