Rural Summit brings state leaders to Fallon

Local and state leaders will gather in Fallon to discuss issues specific for rural communities at the Rural Summit 2007, held Aug. 28-30 at the Fallon Convention Center.

Produced by the Nevada Rural Development Council based in Carson City, the Rural Summit is targeted toward farm, ranch, business, community, county and state leaders. The theme of the event is "Developing Nevada's Future through Leadership" and is aimed at delivering useful knowledge attendees can carry to their respective cities.

"We want to have participants come away with practical knowledge they can apply to their organizations and communities regarding solutions on critical issues," said Clint Koble, program director for Nevada Rural Development Council.

Participants will be given the opportunity to pick and choose specific breakout sessions to attend, along with several general assembly presentations. Three pre-conference workshops will be held Tuesday afternoon, followed by a tour of the Fallon Farmers Market and the welcome reception delivered by Congressman Dean Heller.

Wednesday, the only full day of the conference, kicks off with a presentation by Mark Drabenstott from the Center for the Study of Rural America with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Jim Fitzgerald of the USDA's Rural Development Washington D.C. office will speak at lunch, which splits a full day of hour-long breakout sessions including topics like affordable housing, energy, rural tourism, leadership, rural health care and agriculture/energy.

The entire conference meets again Wednesday afternoon for a session of grant writing, followed by an awards session with Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and Drabenstott speaking again at dinner.

Governor Jim Gibbons will open the Thursday conference session with an economic development forum, followed by Tim Rubald from the Nevada Commission on Economic Development. A rural legislative review, followed by a panel discussion on funding rural economic development concludes Thursday's conference session by noon.

Registration cost is $100, which includes all presentations and meals. Special lodging rates for out-of-town attendees are set up at the Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Inn.
