On the Sidelines - Supporting a good cause

During the years, Fallon residents have generously reached into their pockets and donated to good causes.

Another good cause needs your support.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament to help a 5-year-old Fallon girl will be held Saturday at E.C. Best school's outside courts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Total Fitness Athletic Club and other sponsors are holding the benefit for Autumn Sponsler. Autumn is suffering from a rare genetic disease known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which causes a defect in the connective tissue that provides support to the skin, muscles and ligaments.

Autumn has been seeing a physician in San Francisco who works with children who have this disease. The physician is not a specialist in this area of medicine but one who has worked with other children having Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The doctor in San Francisco has recommended to Autumn's parents they take her to Maryland to see a doctor who is more of specialist with this syndrome.

Bert Johnson, one of the organizers of the basketball tournament, has been seeking teams for this fundraiser. Today is the deadline for signing up a team.

"We have six adult and three elementary teams," Johnson said.

He would like to see more teams of younger players.

"Do you know of any elementary kids who would want to play" Johnson asked.

The fundraiser is welcoming players of all ages, children through adults for this one-day tournament. Johnson said entry fees for the teams are as follows: $25 for elementary students, $25 for teens and $50 for teams in the Children Division and $75 for adults.

Lisa Gough, co-owner of Total Fitness Athletic Club, said a barbecue will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Gough has taken a sincere interest in the cause. She said this will be the first fundraiser the club has done since it opened in 2001.

"We thought it would be nice to do something for Autumn to help the family with some of the medical expenses to get her back to Maryland for more tests," Gough said.

Gough said the response from the community has been a blessing. She said the fire department and several businesses have helped out tremendously.

"Everyone went to bat,"Gough said. :I am so grateful for that."

She said many people worked on this fundraiser in a short amount of time. Other firms such as Banner Churchill Community Hospital, Safeway, Wal-Mart and Heck's Meat donated food for the barbecue.

For more information on signing up a team, contact Bert Johnson at (775) 217-1360 or e-mail him at ndnref2k2@yahoo.com.

Gough, who has a good nucleus of corporate sponsors for this fundraiser, said she is accepting more businesses through today.
