The order of finish among the six teams in the High Desert League championships at Carson City's aquatic center doesn't tell the entire story.
Although the boys' team placed fifth, and the girls came in sixth, Fallon qualified 18 out of 25 swimmers to next week's Northern 4A Region finals, which will also be held in Carson City.
"That's probably the most number of swimmers who became qualified," said coach Atsuko Perkins.
She said a handful of swimmers had personal-best times and were under the maximum time allowed for qualifying to the regional meet.
Reno and Carson high schools ran away with the top two positions in the boys' division. Reno edged the Senators, 448 points to 441. The next three teams are clustered together. McQueen had 283 followed by Spanish Springs with 270 and Fallon with 261 points.
Reno accumulated 441 points in the girls' division. McQueen came in second followed by Galena, Spanish Springs, Carson City and Fallon.
The Lady Wave brought a 13-member team to the meet, the smallest of any squad. Out of the 13 swimmers, nine advance to regionals.
The relay teams competed at the regional meet, but Perkins said all the teams compete Saturday, and the top three advance to state.
"We are shooting for both the girls' and boys' relays to go to state," she said.
Perkins said Emma Stotz and Beth Deines have qualified for regionals based on their times, but both are out because of medical problems.
