LVN file photo The CCHS choir, seen at last year's game with the Giants and Diamondbacks, will sing the national anthem at AT&T Park on April 21 for the fifth straight year.
If the Churchill County High School concert (formally jazz) choir keeps getting invited to sing at the San Francisco Giants' ball park, it should consider changing the school's colors to orange and black.
"When I get out there with the kids, I want to take 10 seconds, turn around and look up," choir director Kathy Archey said about the San Francisco ball park. "I can't imagine what it's like to be a baseball player."
For the fifth straight year, Archey's group of 64 students will sing the national anthem at AT&T Park on April 21, when the Giants host the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:05 p.m. The group will also sing before the game, and the high school's NJROTC color guard will present the flags during the anthem. The choir will sing at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo on April 20.
The group of 64 is the largest Archey will take to the Bay Area since its first trip in 2003 when the Giants lost to the Cubs in extra innings. Since then, the Giants beat the Brewers and Marlins before losing to the Diamondbacks last year.

"It's just a neat thing. The kids look forward to it every year," Archey said. "It's one of my biggest recruiting tools. They can put it on their résumés."
The choir has auditioned only one time (2003) and has been invited by the Giants every year since then.
"I think that puts a big feather in our cap because we get called," Archey said.
Last year's appearance worked in conjunction with the Giants' fundraising project when $9 of every ticket sold by the choir would be donated back to the school's music program. The result: a day marked specifically for the school, "Churchill County High School Day."

This year will not be any different, especially with the All-Star game coming to San Francisco in July and Barry Bonds chasing the all-time home run record.
"It will be CCHS day again for the second time," Archey said. "It's really neat, and our name is plastered all over the park.
"This is a great year because of the Giants being selected to host the All-Star game, and Barry is close to the record."
Archey still remembers the choir's first visit in 2003 when the school's name was posted on the jumbo screen, but didn't include the city and state.

"People were asking our kids if we are from Canada," Archey said.
Last fall, the choir took a break from the sports scene and sung the national anthem in New York at Ground Zero, St. Paul's and the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Fallon participated in the National Anthem Project and was chosen to represent Nevada.
Since then, more members have been joining Archey's program, leading to one of her biggest groups in her teaching career at CCHS.
Because of Archey's work and Fallon producing a strong, talented choir every year, people are becoming aware that Fallon does not lie in Canada.
Tickets can be purchased from the choir for $26 by visiting the high school or talking with a member of the staff at 423-2181.
