Three people declared their candidacy for the office of Fallon mayor on Tuesday, the first day to file affidavits of candidacy. None filed for the Ward 2 City Council seat on Tuesday, currently held by Bob Erickson.
Incumbent Ken Tedford Jr., Tony Giove and Robert Smith all filed papers to declare their candidacy.
Tedford, 53, was elected as mayor in 1995 and won elections in 1999 and 2003. He owns Tedford Tire and Auto Service and is a single father of four.
Tony Giove, 57, is a former Fallon police officer who now works in the electronics department at Wal-Mart. Giove announced his candidacy with a press release earlier this month.
Smith, 23, is a stay-at-home father with an 11-month-old son who watches his fiancée's two young step-children. He has lived in Fallon five years.
The 10-day filing period opened Tuesday and will remain open through April 6, which is 60 days before the June 5 election. The filing fee is $10.
The Ward 2 council seat, a four-year term, is up for election again this year even though it was included on the 2005 ballot. Erickson was elected to fulfill the remaining two years for that council seat following the deaths of Hank and Marilyn Cornu. Hank Cornu resigned the council seat in October 2004 due to declining health, and Marilyn was elected by the council to serve out her husband's term; however, she passed away in May 2005.
Ken McConwell was elected by the council to serve the five-week interim term from May to June 2005 until the city elections were held.
Any adult resident of the city of Fallon can become a candidate, providing they can prove residency for at least 30 days in the district they will represent - usually with a picture identification with a current address and other documents stating the candidate's name and residential address.
The city clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Boundaries for Wards 1 and 2 were changed in February to better reflect population changes.
New voters can register with the city clerk during normal business hours and during extended hours May 12, 14 and 15.
