If the Humboldt rodeo club from Winnemucca makes a strong bid for this year's state high school title, the team may be in debt to a pair of Fallon girls.
Olie Fowler and Bailey Corkill are competing for the Humboldt club this year for personal reasons. The Nevada High School Rodeo Association allows cowboys and cowgirls to compete on other teams outside their areas.
Corkill was a runner-up last season as a freshman for the all-around cowgirl title, and she was the national rookie of the year.
The Fallon sophomore is in second place for all-around honors behind Jenna Mariluch of Battle Mountain. Fowler is in sixth place.
Corkill and here team roping partner, Dakota Eldridge, are in fourth place. She is also competing in poles (eighth place), goat tying (fourth), breakaway (fourth) and girls cutting (10th).
Fowler, a junior, is competing in barrel racing (tied for eight), barrel racing (third), goat tying (fifth) and breakaway.
In addition to the two Fallon cowgirls, Jessi Wilcox is now competing for Winnemucca. Wilcox was a member of the Fernley High School club last year. She is tied for 10th place in goat tying and is alone in 10th place in breakaway roping.
Wilcox is also competing in barrel racing.
