After winning three straight Nevada high school rodeo titles, Fallon saw its chances for a fourth championship fizzle when Elko won the state championship last year.

The Fallon High School Rodeo club has a 31-member team this season with 20 returnees, but this year's group of cowboys and cowgirls has the potential to finish on top.

"We have a very strong team," said Vonda Norcutt, secretary of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association. Her husband Wayne is one of the team's co-advisors with Jane Capurro. "The kids in the Fallon club are very versatile. We have kids who compete in every event except steer wrestling. The team is very cohesive."

The team's posing the biggest threats to Fallon this season include the Humboldt club (Winnemucca) and Elko.

The spring season began last month with several rodeos in Southern Nevada. Now, the action has shifted to this part of the state with Fernley hosting the first rodeo in Northern Nevada. In two weeks, Fallon will host its own high school rodeo.

Norcutt said the team members are encouraging each other, and the parents are move involved.

"The parents help the kids at practice," she said. "We all help in different areas. Jane (Capurro) and her husband Gary help the bull riders and bareback. Machele and David Howard help with breakaway and barrels, and the Julians help with cutting."

Norcutt said the spring season looks promising for Fallon. Based on results from Fallon's fall season and the first three rodeos in Southern Nevada, she said the local cowboys and cowgirls have been placing in the top 10 in almost every event.

So far this year, Norcutt said Cara Julian has won four girls' cutting events, while Jordan Norcutt has won three firsts in goat tying. Jordan Norcutt is fifth in the all-around cowgirl standings and first overall in goat tying.

Vonda Norcutt said Julian is dominating the cutting, while Logan Nuttall leads the standings in tie-down (calf) roping.

Devin Norcutt is in third place in saddle bronc, one place behind co-leaders Marc Morrison and O.D. Garfield. Colin Steele is team roping.

Chelsea Hubner is tied for fourth place in pole bending and has settled into third pace in barrel racing.

Vonda Norcutt said the experienced team members are making the biggest impact on the team. She said the first-year members are also enthusiastic.

"The new kids are also making a big impact because they are so eager to learn and help out," she said.

Norcutt said two rough stock riders, Ty and Justin Ethridge, are in the top five of their respective events. Ty Ethridge is tied for fourth place in bull riding, and Justin Ethridge is also tied for fourth in bareback.

She said Colt Capurro has been consistent in boys' cutting, tie-down roping and team roping, and Morgan Howard has competed in barrels, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and girls' cutting. Terynn Archuleta has entered tie-down and team roping.
