No. 4 sports story - Rodeos galore in Fallon

Print Comment
Last year did not disappoint Fallon's rodeo organizers or participants as the Oasis of Nevada continues to be the unofficial rodeo capital of the Silver State.

Fallon's high school rodeo club began its spring season in March and hosted a rodeo in April. The season culminated with the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals in Fernley. Elko broke Fallon's three-year hold on the state title by edging the local cowboys and cowgirls.

Fallon's Bailey Corkill finished the season as the state's top rookie cowgirl. Corkill qualified for nationals in team roping, breakaway roping and pole bending.

Olie Fowler finished second in barrel racing followed by Chelsea Hubner in third. Fowler also took fourth in pole bending.

Jordan Norcutt had a strong top 15 finals and finished second in goat tying. Cara Julian of Fallon came in fourth in girls' cutting. Beau Drake posted 74 points in his final ride in bull riding and finished third. Devin Norcutt had a rough ride in saddle bronc, but he placed fourth.

More than 500 contestants attended 2006's Silver State International Rodeo.

The SSIR is for high school cowboys and cowgirls who finished fifth through 10th in their respective state high school rodeos. The top four from each state advanced to nationals.

Contestants came from almost every part of the United States and two Canadian provinces, British Columbia and Alberta.

The rodeo, though, experienced a hitch before the first event took place.

Many were concerned that the rodeo wouldn't be held last year because of a panel issue. The rodeo faced a shortage of panels for horse stalls in the weeks preceding the event. However, the city of Fallon stepped in and made a loan to SSIR for more than $82,000 to purchase panels.

Both Fernley and Fallon were major stops on this year's Senior Pro Rodeo circuit.

September's Fallon rodeo marked the end of the season for contestants competing for points and standings in their respective events.

The next rodeo for these seasoned rodeo veterans were the nationals in late October at Winnemucca.

Approximately 160 contestants competed in Fallon.

The Lions Junior Rodeo had another successful rodeo during the Labor Day weekend. However, the All-Indian Days rodeo was not held because of monetary concerns.
