Flag football touts 2006's success

NFL flag football has been a great success in its second year here in Fallon. We grew 50 percent from 2005 to 140 players in 2006. We fielded 17 teams this year compared to 12 last year.

Our 12 to 14 girls' team, the Fallon Green Bay Packers, are returning to the national games in Orlando for a second straight year. As we get ready to play our final 2006 local games today at E.C. Best, I want to recognize all the people that offered their time and effort.

This league works due to the volunteer coaches who spend lots of time working with the players, planning practices and designing plays. The head coaches were the first to step forward in August or earlier, and they have done a great job: Tami Peel, Keith Sherman, Jake Herringshaw, Don McCollum, Don Ussery, Don Hall, Keith Boone, Ted Christoph, Paul Orong, Matt Martinez, Warren Lunden, Jason Stephen, Matt Dick, Michael Walker, Yessenia Maldonado, John Swisher and Gary Monardo. A big thanks goes to their assistant coaches as well.

We've all read about the difficulties of finding referees for youth sports, and it's hard for us too. They learn the game from reading only the very basic flag rules, which are given by NFL Youth Football and learn the rest "on the job" by refereeing the games. Jerry Waters has been with us before the first year began when he saw Paul Orong and myself at the Farmers Market. He has taken the "head of referees" title to heart, telephoning the refs each week, printing up info cards for all the refs and providing field markers to help monitor positions of those blitzing the quarterbacks. John King, Daniel Bogen, Warren Wood, Don Hall, Paul Orong and Dave Faulk have "ref'd" games for us this year.

Thanks to Scott Meihack, the principal of E.C. Best, and the Churchill County School District for providing a place for the kids to play; the Fallon Farmers Market for letting us run the Bounce House while advertising to the community; Paul Orong and his wife Randie for setting up the teams' hotel and amusement park fun day, while at the NFL Flag Western Regionals in Santa Clara, Calif.; and my wife Barbara for making all the league purchases, arranging and selling the league T-shirts, loading all the field equipment each Friday night, helping me at the games seven hours each Saturday and being understanding of the time I spent on the phone and computer.

After it's all set up, a big thank you goes to the players and their parents for participating in NFL Flag Fallon. It's very satisfying watching your kids play while your parents cheer you on.
