INCLINE VILLAGE - When it rains, it pours.

The Lady Wave tennis team lost one of its most important matches of the season, costing them a higher seed in the team regional tournament.

Behind a second round sweep, Incline High School handled Fallon, 12-5, Tuesday afternoon at the Incline tennis center.

"I thought it would be much closer, 10-8 them," Fallon coach Tommy Thomson said. "We didn't come to play. It's one of those deals. Even in tennis you have to get yourself ready for a big match. We didn't do that today."

Because of the loss, Fallon (5-4, 4-3 league) will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed from the High Desert League, while Incline snatched the third seed. Fallon will travel to Reno next week to face the high-powered Huskies.

Thomson, who has emphasized every year the importance of his doubles teams, did not count on Incline's singles players to be overpowering.

"Incline's stronger in singles than we are in doubles," Thomson said. "They have good, consistent singles players."

To add more pain to the misery, the Wave's top doubles team of Vanessa Angus and Tiffany Kemp saw their 24-match win streak end.

Heading into Tuesday's contest, the Fallon duo had won two dozen straight matches, including 18 in league play, after losing to Reno's No. 1 team in the first match of the year.

Angus and Kemp barely held on to win their first-round match against the Highlanders' top seed, 6-4, adding to their long win streak. Angus and Kemp, though, were ahead 5-1.

Disaster struck in the second round when they lost to the No. 3 team, Jessica Dykstra and Rebecca Corpuel, 7-5. Angus and Kemp responded in the third round with a 7-5 win.

Even with the loss, Thomson said his doubles team should still get a No. 1 seed in the individual regional tournament next month.

"I can't imagine them being anything but a No. 1," he said.

Fallon's only other doubles win came in the first round when Christina Conner and Nicole Ricks battled back against Liz Ferme and Amanda Martin. Conner and Ricks won 7-4 in a tiebreaker.

Thomson's third team, Chrissy Ibarra and Markesha Wilson, lost all three matches.

Lauren Ryon held her own in singles, winning in the first and third rounds.

The sophomore came from behind at 5-3 in the first round against Ale Richards to win 7-5. Ryon defeated the Highlanders' ace, Shea Wickland, 6-3.

Fallon plays its last match of the regular season today against Sparks at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex. Thomson will honor his three seniors, Melanie Black, Kemp and Wilson, before the match.
