Being in business for three weeks hasn't stopped S & K Coffee, LLC from making a stand against the newly opened Starbucks.
The community owned coffee shop, located across from the gift shop inside Banner Churchill Community Hospital off East Williams Avenue, provides customers with a variety of coffee, espressos and tea.
"Sharyn (Juarez) and Kim (Hammer) were both talking that it would be a benefit to have a coffee shop at the hospital," said S & K Coffee, LLC Manager Darren Hammer. "It was basically the girls' idea and us guys backed them up."
"It was a brainstorm that just took off," Juarez said. "We knew the hospital needed good coffee."

Darren Hammer said with the location in the hospital, some of the coffee shop's profits are going toward the hospital volunteer auxiliary. Kim Hammer added that Charlie Myers, Cindy Johnson and Linda Loeppky of BCCH helped get the business started in the hospital.
Along with Juarez and Kim and Darren Hammer, S & K Coffee, LLC also employs Lindsey Hammer, Eli Juarez and Kristen Hill. Lindsey Hammer received certification in Washington to be a barista.
"She makes really good coffee," Darren Hammer said of Lindsey. "We still don't have her skills yet, but we will in time."
S & K Coffee, LLC also sells Italian sodas, lattés, chai tea, iced coffee, hot chocolate and will be offering smoothies and protein shakes.
Along with Juarez and Kim and Darren Hammer, S & K Coffee, LLC also employs Lindsey Hammer, Eli Juarez and Kristen Hill. Lindsey Hammer received certification in Washington to be a barista.

"We have a ton of stuff," Darren Hammer said. "We haven't branched out to the food thing. That's why we're trying to branch into smoothies and protein drinks. We're not doing them yet, but that's our next step."
Hammer said his company's coffee is unique because it is imported from Italy.
"It's expensive, great tasting coffee," Hammer added about the Illy coffee.
Prices range from $1.25 for a 12 ounce brewed coffee to $4 for a 16 ounce mocha. There are 12 different flavors of coffee and espresso while there are 18 for the Italian sodas.
Hammer said his company's coffee is unique because it is imported from Italy.
"It's expensive, great tasting coffee," Hammer added about the Illy coffee.

Aside from their location in the hospital, S & K Coffee, LLC provides a catering service. So far, they've attended the Silver State International Convention and the EMT convention.
"We did the SSIR and we're going to do the Cantaloupe Festival," Hammer said. "We have the ability to do weddings, too. We're portable."
Even though S & K Coffee, LLC can be contacted at 775-851-8356, Hammer said the company will be getting a new phone number soon.
S & K Coffee, LLC, which is located at 801 E. Williams Ave., is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
