The Fallon City Council approved the sale of inactive water rights into the Newlands Water Rights Purchase Program, known as AB380, at its meeting Wednesday night.
The city owned a total of 8.45 acres of water rights at several locations, which includes 2.7 acres on Rice Road and 5.75 acres in small fractions at numerous locations. The water right purchase agreements were between the city and the Carson Water Subconservancy District (CWSD) for a total of $18,590.
The AB380 program, so called because it originated as an assembly bill in the 1999 Nevada Legislature, was established to purchase and retire water rights challenged by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe in its effort to reclaim water from the Truckee and Carson Rivers from Truckee-Carson Irrigation District water users.
The city's contract with the CWSD was signed by Mayor Ken Tedford on June 28, two days before the expiration date of the AB380 program. The council did not have a chance to approve the contract beforehand because "time is of the essence in this agreement," according to language in the contract.
Councilmen John Tewell and Bob Erickson approved the two water right purchase agreements while Councilman Willis Swan abstained from the vote because he sits on the board of the CWSD.
In other council business:
An on-premises unrestricted liquor license was granted to Ofelia Murillo who will be operating El Diamonte Bar/Grill Restaurant. The restaurant will be located at 111 S. Allen Road in the old Waterhole building.
A "resident only parking" sign was granted for a homeowner on West Center Street. Overflow parking from an adjacent business often reduces parking in front of the home.
A parcel map for Taylor Place Townhomes, LLC was changed from one lot to two lots. There are currently two four-plexes on the property located near the corner of Taylor Street and Keddie Street.
A water truck bid was awarded to Mayer Equipment, Inc. in the amount of $55,000. The used water truck, a 3,700-gallon, single rear-axle vehicle, will be used in the city and at the landfill.
The next City Council meeting will be held Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at City Hall in the council chambers.
