A 22-year-old Fallon transient is accused of traveling to California Wednesday where he picked up a 13-year-old girl and brought her to Fallon. The two later allegedly had sex.
Brady James Drayton was arrested after Fallon police received a tip about the alleged crime. Drayton was initially charged with statutory sexual seduction, being under he influence of a controlled substance, sales of marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was being held in the Churchill County Jail in lieu of $33,764 bail.
After a review by the Churchill County District Attorney's Office, the suspect will face more serious allegations.
Deputy District Attorney Tom Stockard said Thursday afternoon that formal charges of lewdness with a child under the age of 14 were being filed. That offense carries a mandatory life sentence, with parole eligibility after a minimum of 10 years have been served, and a fine up to $10,000.
Drayton is also accused of furnishing marijuana to the girl, being under the influence of marijuana and two misdemeanors.
"He admitted to that," Stockard said.
Ironically, Stockard was watching a TV program Wednesday night that showed men who thought they were meeting a 13-year-old girl they met through the Internet. During the airing of the "Dateline" show, Fallon police tracked Stockard down at the gym to ask a couple legal questions about Drayton's case. The television program revealed how adult men use the Internet to entice young girls to meet them for sex.
Fallon Assistant Police Chief Ray Dolan said Drayton and the girl corresponded through the Internet, letters and phone calls. They have known each other since November, he said. Drayton once lived in the Paso Robles, Calif., area where the girl resides, said Dolan.
"He was here living with his parents and that didn't work out so he has being living wherever he could live. The people he was living with drove him down there," Dolan said about the trip to California.
Police were called just after 8 p.m. Wednesday by a local informant who wants to remain anonymous, he added.
The alleged crime occurred in the 800 block of McLean Street.
Dolan said the girl was taken to the Western Nevada Regional Youth Center in Silver Springs until her parents could pick her up. She is charged with being a child in need of supervision, according to Dolan.
