County to consider medical park plan

Churchill County Commissioners will consider a proposal this morning from Churchill Community Hospital, Inc. regarding the local not-for-profit corporation's plan to develop a medical business park adjacent to the hospital.

"Our goal is to have a medical campus that will support the hospital, the county and most of all the community," said Mike Berney chairman of CCH, Inc. "Our intention is to enhance the quality of medical care in Churchill County."

CCH has been supporting medical care in Churchill County for more than 10 years. It has also been instrumental in development of medical care through physician recruitment, purchase of medical equipment, ambulances and medical facilities, according to county documents.

CCH proposes acquiring the balance of the county property not leased by Banner Churchill Community Hospital at fair market value to build the business park. The county would use those proceeds for continued support of public health, health care and social services in the community.

"As soon as we're wrapped up with the county we'd like to get started," said Berney. CCH plans to break ground by August or September as soon as the development is approved by the county.

Currently, there are no prospects as to what will be in the business park. However there are several ideas from commissioners and CCH, such as a radiation facility, a cardiology facility, veterans affairs, a larger senior center and physicians offices.

"No set plan or agreement has been made with anyone as of this time," said Berney.

County Commissioner Lynn Pearce said the county would require that all proposals for the park should be to enhance the quality of health or medical care.

"Perhaps putting a Chili's restaurant would not be a good choice, but a health food store or restaurant, maybe that would be an option," said Pearce.

The development is meant to benefit the community, the county, the hospital, current physicians and to help entice new physicians to come to Fallon, he said.

"First impressions are important for recruitment," said Pearce. "This is one of those win-win-win scenarios where everybody wins."

The Churchill County Commission will meet at 8:15 a.m. today in the County Administration Building, 155 N. Taylor St.
