Ex-president's son mulling a run for U.S. Senate

Jack Carter, son of ex-president Jimmy Carter and a likely U.S. Senate candidate, will make an appearance in Fallon Wednesday night.

Carter will be in Fallon for a reception Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Fallon Elks Lodge, 93 W. Center St. There is no cost for the event. Hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar will available, and casual attire is suggested.

The event is sponsored by the Churchill County Democrats.

Carter planned the stop as one in a series of meetings designed to meet residents and local officials from around the state, said Marcia de Braga, a former Democratic state Assemblywoman and Churchill County resident. The meeting is open to those of any political persuasion, she said.

"It's open to anyone who wants to meet and talk with him," de Braga said. "Basically, what he's doing is traveling around the state and learning what people are saying and what the issues are."

The affair will include a speech and a meet and greet session with Carter and his wife, Elizabeth, de Braga said.

"He seems like a really kind person who's really concerned about the country," she said.

Though he is yet to officially declare his candidacy, he appears a likely challenger to U.S. Sen. John Ensign in 2006. His Web site, carterfornevada.com, includes a biography and a link to donate money to via credit card to the Carter for Senate Committee.

"I'm Jack Carter and I would be honored to serve Nevada in the United States Senate," a statement on his Web site says.

Born in Portsmouth, Va. in 1947, Carter grew up in Georgia, where he worked on the family peanut farm, according to his Web site. He left for college, but then decided to join the U.S. Navy. He received an administrative discharge in 1970 after admitting to using drugs.

He later earned a law degree from the University of Georgia, worked for his father's presidential campaign and entered the banking industry.

He and his wife also ran their own business in Bermuda. He moved to Las Vegas in 2002.
