"That's used for people who are unable to pay for diabetes education, and they are usually person who do not have any insurance," said Connie Honea, a diabetes educator at BCCH and organizer of the event.
The competitive 5k run will be broken down into five age groups, Honea said. Ribbons will be given out for first, second and third place in each age group, and medals will be presented for the best male and female finishing times. There will also be a casual 2.5k walk.
Last year, 119 registration forms were received, and 132 were received as of last week, with more expected the day of the event, Honea said.
"We had moms with babies in carriages, people walking their dogs, very young kids running and people probably over 70 walking," she said of last year's turnout. "It was a wonderful spread of ages."

More than 20.8 million people, about 7 percent of the U.S. population, have diabetes, according to 2005 information from the Centers for Disease Control. The figure includes 14.6 million diagnosed cases and an estimated 6.2 million undiagnosed cases.
At least 1.5 million new cases of diabetes will be diagnosed in 2005, according to CDC estimates.
The need for diabetes education and awareness has become direly important as diagnosis rates continue to climb in the U.S. population, Honea said.

"People have to be active," she said. "They cannot sit around working on their computers all day and watching TV all day and expect to maintain their health."
