The Churchill County School District won approval for a $100,000 grant to provide surveillance equipment and fencing for the high school parking lot.
Superintendent Carolyn Ross said the district will have to put in $50,000 as a requirement of the Community Oriented Policing grant.
Ross said details about the type of surveillance equipment will be worked out and the equipment will be installed as soon as possible to increase safety at the high school.
She hopes to qualify for a similar grant this year to add surveillance equipment to hallways on campus. The district would have to come up with another $50,000 to qualify for the $100,000 from the federal government.
"We have prioritized what our needs are and have a feeling it will be for more surveillance in the halls," Ross said. We're going to be doing a camera kind of thing."
She said surveillance will focus on prevention of crime and increased safety in student areas.
The district and the Fallon Police Department began writing a grant proposal last spring. Police Chief Russ Brooks was notified recently by Congressman Jim Gibbons about the award.
Ross said high school principal John Riley and former vice principal Jim Sustacha will work with the police department to implement the grant. Sustacha was recently named principal at West End Elementary School. While at the high school, he handled student discipline along with other duties.
Brooks said the Secure our Schools grant is aimed at preventing crime and dangerous incidents on school grounds.
"It's a tremendous benefit for the community," he said.
