Students at three Fallon schools were delayed from going home Tuesday for about 15 minutes after Fallon police received a report of a man with a gun chasing a woman.
Fallon Police Chief Russ Brooks said a citizen called to report a man wielding a handgun chasing a heavy-set woman on Tolas Place behind a church just as class was getting out.
"We saturated the area but didn't find anyone," Brooks said.
He said the person who called in the report couldn't be contacted again because his cell phone died. About 10 minutes later, officers caught up with him and he told police the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.
"He said the couple was joking and walked away when he confronted them," said Brooks.
Students were locked into classrooms at Churchill County Junior High School and Churchill County High School. CCHS Principal John Riley held children from Lahontan Elementary School at the intersection of Merton Drive and Taylor Street as they were on their way home.
Brooks said police searched for about an hour without finding the two suspicious people. He said the man was described as having bleached-blond hair and was wearing a West Coast Chopper shirt and jeans. The woman was only described as a heavy-set Asian.
"All we had was a description of a man chasing a woman with a handgun. We did not find anything. We just don't know," he said.
This is the second time the high school has been locked down this month.
On May 20, students were locked in class because a pupil was found in the student parking lot with a gun to his head.
A school security guard was able to talk the boy out of his car and he was taken for mental health counseling. During a lock-down, no one is allowed to leave or enter school property.
"It's good practice for everyone," Brooks said about the two recent incidents. "The more practice you get the better you get at it. The schools did everything right and it helps us a lot when we don't have to worry about that."
