Five file for Fallon City Council so far

Two women have filed so far for the Ward 2 Fallon City Council seat left vacant when Hank Cornu resigned because of health problems.

Nancy Newton, the comptroller at Stockman's Casino, and Veronica Munoz, a West Center Street resident, are vying for the open seat in Ward 2. Ward 2 covers the area bordered by Williams Avenue, Allen Road, Sheckler Road and Taylor Street.

The successful candidate will serve the remaining two years of Cornu's four-year term.

His wife, Marilyn Cornu, was appointed by the Fallon City Council to fill her husband's seat after he resigned.

In Ward 3, incumbent John Tewell will also face a challenger in the June 7 election.

Fallon police officer Tony Giove has filed as a candidate in Ward 3, which encompasses the area east of Taylor Street. Giove, who has previously run for elected city office, is retiring from the police department.

The council member elected in Ward 3 will serve a four-year term.
