Mayor Ken Tedford is participating in an Arbor Day tree planting ceremony at Laura Mills Park on Friday as part of the statewide Mayors for Shade program. Councilman John Tewell plans to join Mayor Tedford, Jerry Mayfield and Jerry Llamas as the four help plant a Fraxinus Oxyrpa (Raywood) Ash tree in the park across from the gazebo. The ceremony starts at 1 p.m.
Tedford and other mayors throughout Nevada will plant trees in parks, along streets, and in other public areas in their communities during the month of September. The Mayors for Shade program was developed after Pat Rowley, Urban Forestry State Specialist, read about the resolution that was adopted at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 71st annual meeting to promote the preservation and creation of urban forests stating that urban forests provide green infrastructure for cities linking communities to recreational areas and green spaces, improving the quality of life for residents and allowing residents to take an active role in planting, protecting and restoring forest areas. In support of this resolution, Mayor Tedford and Councilman Tewell are taking active roles in preserving the community urban forest.
The Mayors for Shade program is funded by a USDA Forest Service grant that was awarded to the University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Resource Economics. Partners in this grant are the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Nevada League of Cities, and Nevada Division of Forestry. The Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit education organization that helps people plant and care for trees, sponsors the Tree City USA program with the support of the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
